Living across the street, I always passed by this place but never came in, and I regret we did in the end. There is not one Italian working in this Italian-wanna-be restaurant. Our server was arrogant from the moment we stepped in. No wine list as someone has mentioned, just a question - white or red. We asked to try their wine as there was no wine menu. After having a few glasses and our food (which was very mediocre, by the way), we decided to get another glass of wine and also asked to taste
I thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance. There are fewer and fewer NYC restaurants that keep the character of old charm. This is one of them. The menu has some interesting choices along with standard Italian menu food. The food is well prepared and the service is charming.
Barberesco offers pleasant service and a good atmosphere, but the experience quickly reveals itself as a tourist trap. No wine list was presented, only a casual prompt of “glass or bottle?” followed by steeply priced pours with little transparency. The food is adequate but not worthy of the premium. The servers were warm and professional and tipped generously, yet the overall value leaves no reason to return.
