Pineapple on pizza may be a crime but pineapple on torta is just plain innovation. The Hawaiian was #2 on a list of 40+ torta options at Don Pepe Tortas Y Jugos so I assumed it didn’t earn silver medal for nothing. It's a hearty sandwich with avocado, Oaxaca cheese, tomato, pineapple, and pork multiple ways for $12. Only downside is they missed a perfectly good opportunity to use spam. Take your sandwich to Sunset Park for some city views and a pretty pleasant afternoon.
Multiple people recommended this place to me, so I was surprised it only had four stars. I still went and had a carnitas torta that was excellent! Friendly service. Chill atmosphere since it feels like a bodega that slowly started just serving food instead. There are maybe five tables in the back. Definitely recommend for a quick lunch!
Don Pepe is a great spot for tortas, they have so many options I couldn’t even count them all. In addition to tortas, they also serve tacos, burritos, and other Mexican dishes. The food is good and affordable. It’s mostly a takeout place, with just a few tables inside, so it’s perfect for grabbing lunch to go. The wait time can vary depending on how busy they are, and yes the customer service is not the best, which is why I’m giving them 4 stars instead of 5. They also make fresh juices and sm
