This was a short visit, and I found this restaurant within walking distance of where I stayed. It was my first time at Kaoru, and I really enjoyed the atmosphere, it felt comfortable even dining alone. The servers were kind and friendly, and the food was fresh, delicious, and well worth the price. The portions were generous; even with a bowl and an appetizer, it was more than enough for one person. Came with a friend just after they opened at 11:30am on a weekday for a quick lunch. The smiling woman greeted us kindly and we did to-go orders. We ordered the 3 amigos donburi bowl for $24 and the Uni bowl with tuna & fluke for $35. We took a to-go order and it was ready in about 5 minutes. The place is most definitely family run, I think it's the owners husband and wife and son. The place has a vintage feel from the wood and the accessories, definitely well loved by local the local Japanese.
This is a hidden little gem in NYC that I have to visit every single time I’m in the city — no exceptions. It’s one of those blink-and-you-miss-it spots, but the quality is unreal.
